Christmas rush

"Christmas rush"
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 12, 2009
Tick tock. Tick tock.

Unlike the previous Christmas celebrations when I almost completed my Yuletide shopping by the 1st week of December, this year is a whole lot different...I have not even reached half of my Christmas list yet. Help!!!

“Don’t panic”, I say to myself. I know I am not alone in my gift-finding quest. I braved the Christmas rush, visited bazaars and asked around for recommendations. Here are some holiday presents that will surely be on my list:

SuperDevos (365 Devotions for Energized Kids) books

Written by one of my favorite children’s authors, Grace D. Chong, SuperDevos is a wonderful gift idea for kids ages 7 and up. It has 365 devotions, one for each active day of the year.

According to Grace, “a once-a-week lesson on God’s precepts during Sundays is good, but hardly enough. SuperDevos comes at a time when we and our children are too busy to sit down together and talk about the Word of God.”

Every devotion is, at most, two minutes long and contains eye-catching visuals by John Michael Lu. Priced only at P325, SuperDevos books are available at OMF Lit Bookshop, Ground floor, Mitaji Building, Tionko cor. Mapa Sts., Davao City. Telephone number 082.221.3416.

Tomo (I Was An Eighth-Grade Ninja) graphic novel

Winner of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards in the Comic/Graphic Novel Category, Tomo is a tale of Hana, a thirteen-year old Japanese orphan trying to fit into life at an American school. She works on her martial-arts skills with her grandfather and his strange little pet. All the practice comes in handy when she battles hostile animal-like warriors from another world. In discovering secrets about her identity and her past, Hana bravely faces her enemies and realizes her divinely-given purpose.

The manga-style illustrations by Filipino artist Ariel Padilla will definitely engage young readers. I love how the series injects Christian values in their stories. Just a word of caution though, the series can be addicting to your kids! Also available at OMF Lit Bookshop for only P175 each.

How to Win Your Child’s Heart book

Psychologist Dr. Ruth Chang reveals the various parenting styles and explains which among them works best in this practical and insightful book. Learn how you can raise your children by remembering to ‘PARENT’—Praise, Accept, Respect, Empathize, Nurture and Train. Buy this meaningful gift for fellow parents for only P150 at OMF Lit Bookshop.

Decoupage tin cans

I saw these adorable decoupage tin cans in a Christmas bazaar. Decoupage is “the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf, etc.”

Made by talented artist Daidai Joaquin, there are endless possibilities for these cans--as dainty home decorations, lovely containers for goodies or flowers and lots more. P120 for large sizes and P100 for small ones. For orders, contact Daidai at (0923)3280100.
